Severstal will invest over 10 billion rubles in a waste-to-energy plant

The Russian steel producer Severstal announced that it will begin construction of a new waste-to-energy thermal power plant at the Cherepovets Iron & Steel Works.

Severstal will invest over 10 billion rubles in a waste-to-energy plant

According to a statement from the company’s press service, the project will cost over 10 billion rubles and aims to significantly increase the company’s own electricity production while reducing CO₂ emissions.

Severstal CEO Alexander Shevelev noted that the project aligns with the company’s strategy to improve energy efficiency, saying: “The core idea of the project is to increase in-house production by using secondary energy sources, primarily waste gases generated by the steel industry. This will reduce our dependence on imported natural gas while also delivering environmental benefits.” According to the CEO, the new thermal power plant could eventually cover up to 95% of the company’s electricity needs with internal generation.

The plant’s technical equipment will include a water treatment unit, steam boiler, condensing turbine unit, a recirculating water supply system with fan cooling towers, a 220 kV electric grid with cable racks, and various auxiliary systems. The plant is expected to use around 2.7 billion cubic meters of blast furnace gas per year and generate roughly 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. The project will also significantly contribute to Severstal’s decarbonization program by reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 420,000 tons annually. The company aims to reduce CO₂ emission intensity by 10% by 2030 compared to 2020 levels.

The new thermal power plant will increase energy supply for facilities including the iron ore pellet production complex currently under construction. Construction, commissioning, and equipment testing are planned to be completed in the second half of 2026.
