The ZWTL certification assesses how effectively waste generated at facilities is recycled and reused as a resource, and whether it is disposed of without being sent to landfill sites. To achieve the platinum level, a minimum recycling rate of 99.5 percent is required, while SeAH Besteel recorded a recycling rate of 99.7 percent in the assessment. This result shows that almost all waste generated at the company’s facilities is recovered.
The achievement is considered particularly noteworthy given the nature of waste generated in special steel production, where recycling is technically challenging. The combined use of steel scrap and various ferroalloys in special steel manufacturing leads to complex by products such as slag and dust, and the recovery of such waste is generally limited.
To address these challenges, SeAH Besteel established a by product resource center within its facilities and invested 3 billion KRW to develop the related infrastructure. The company has successfully commercialized technologies that enable slag generated from electric arc furnaces and refining processes to be used in applications such as asphalt concrete aggregates and ultra rapid setting cement.
