The company has announced that it will invest millions of euros in the installation of a new walking beam furnace and heat recovery system at its hot rolling mill to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the group’s subsidiary, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.
With this new investment, Salzgitter aims to reduce energy consumption in steel production by up to 30% and significantly decrease carbon emissions. This step plays a strategic role in the company’s alignment with the European Green Deal and carbon-neutral production goals.
Thanks to its energy efficiency focus, the project is also supported by Germany’s development bank, KfW. The system is expected to be completed and operational by 2028, with the new setup providing a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly production process at Salzgitter’s facilities.
Thomas Routschek, Operations Director at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, stated, With the new furnace, we will be reducing our energy requirements for slab heating in the hot flat steel area by up to 30 %. This is another significant step towards reducing the CO2 footprint of flat steel products. Subsequent to successful commissioning, all the slabs produced at the Salzgitter site will be processed in the walking beam furnaces in future.”
