Salzgitter AG laid the foundation stone for one of Europe's largest green hydrogen plants

The German steel giant Salzgitter AG has laid the foundation for one of the largest green hydrogen production plants in Europe.

Salzgitter AG laid the foundation stone for one of Europe's largest green hydrogen plants

Salzgitter AG's low CO2 steelmaking program, SALCOS, is set to begin the industrial use of hydrogen with the groundbreaking of the plant on 12 February.

Salzgitter AG - SALCOS project placed the cornerstone for what will be one of the largest green hydrogen production plants in all of Europe. The plant is expected to go into production in 2026 and is expected to produce around 9,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. Salzgitter AG - SALCOS' 100 MW electrolysis plant, which will kick-start the industrial use of hydrogen in low CO2 steel production, will be supplied on an EPC basis by the international technology company ANDRITZ using HydrogenPro's pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology.

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH Technical Director Gerd Baresch stated that they have taken a new step within the scope of the SALCOS project and that the company's transition to low carbon steel production has shown that it is progressing as planned and that they have fulfilled their part for green production. He also added that governments have a great responsibility in creating the conditions for green production.

Sami Pelkonen, Executive Vice President of ANDRITZ Green Hydrogen, stated that they are proud to contribute to the production of climate-friendly green steel with the 100 MW electrolysis plant. He emphasized that the project is part of their decarbonization strategy and that they support companies like Salzgitter in their transition to green production.

Salzgitter AG’s SALCOS project is being implemented in phases, with a direct reduction plant and the electric arc furnace, both under construction, in addition to a 100 MW electrolysis plant for hydrogen production. Salzgitter AG aims to launch products from the new plant as early as 2026. The conversion to nearly carbon-free steel production at the Salzgitter site is expected to be completed by 2033.
