SAIL becomes largest steel supplier for Zojila Tunnel Project

India’s largest steel producer and Maharatna-status public sector enterprise, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has emerged as the largest steel supplier for the prestigious Zojila Tunnel project.

SAIL becomes largest steel supplier for Zojila Tunnel Project

Once completed, this major project will be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest bidirectional tunnel, drawing attention due to its strategic importance.

SAIL has become a critical partner by supplying over 31,000 tons of steel, including TMT rebar, structural steel products, and sheets, supporting the ongoing construction. With continuous steel supply to the tunnel project, scheduled for completion in 2027, SAIL has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to nation-building.

Located at an altitude of 11,578 feet (approximately 3,530 meters) in the challenging Himalayan terrain, the tunnel will provide a road over 30 kilometers long between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil. This tunnel will ensure year-round safe transportation on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, a key part of India’s national infrastructure development, significantly boosting both civilian and military mobility in the region.
