Safeguard investigation into iron and non-alloy steel imports from South Africa

South Africa has initiated a safeguards investigation into imports of flat-rolled products of iron, non-alloy or other alloy steel.

This investigation, covering the period between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2023, will evaluate whether the increase in imports of the products in question has caused potential harm to the local industry.

During the investigation process, South Africa will examine the effects of the products in question on the local industry and evaluate whether they pose a threat of serious harm. Within the scope of the review, 7208.10, 7208.25, 7208.26, 7208.27, 7208.36, 7208.37, 7208.38, 7208.39, 7208.40, 7208.51, 7208.52, 7208 in the Customs Tariff Statistics Position Table. Registered under codes 53, 7208.54, 7208.90, 7211.14, 7225.30, 7225.40, 7225.99 and 7226.99 The products found will be examined.

Safeguard investigations are carried out by WTO member countries in accordance with GATT 1994. Article and the rights arising from the relevant provisions of the WTO Safeguards Agreement. As a result of the investigation opened with the allegation that the increase in absolute or relative imports compared to domestic production resulting from unforeseen developments harms or threatens to harm the domestic industry, there is a potential to apply a protective measure against all imports, regardless of the country of origin.
