The project aims to strengthen the plant’s IT security, increase system availability, and ensure compliance with the latest automation standards. Commissioning is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026.
As part of the project, the Siemens PCS7 system will be upgraded to its latest version, and third-party packages will be consolidated into a single PCS7 project. In addition, the process automation system will be migrated to new Windows and Oracle environments.
Enhanced reliability and modernization
The BETA 2 line produces high- and ultra-high-strength steels for sectors such as automotive, home appliances, construction and electrical steel. The modernization is expected to enhance the plant’s long-term operational reliability and ensure full compatibility with new hardware and software infrastructures.
To maximize system availability, the entire automation engineering environment will be integrated into voestalpine’s virtualization platform. This approach will simplify operation and maintenance processes for personnel managing multiple lines.
Strong partnership continues
Primetals Technologies was selected for the project based on the long-standing successful cooperation between the two companies. Primetals previously carried out a major modernization of the BETA 3 cold rolling mill and, in 2013, upgraded the electrical and automation systems at BETA 2 alongside the installation of new pickling tanks.
The companies are also collaborating on strategic projects in Linz, including the hydrogen-based HYFOR and Smelter industrial-scale demonstration plant, as well as the 180-ton EAF Ultimate electric arc furnace.
