The modernized furnace delivers significant improvements in production efficiency and energy consumption while setting new industry standards in ease of maintenance and operational reliability.
As part of the upgrade, an innovative furnace tilting device was implemented to enhance the precision and speed of furnace movements. The modernization, incorporating the electromagnetic stirrer (EMS) system supplied by ABB, positions Çolakoğlu as a leader in electric steelmaking.
Complex engineering challenges were successfully overcome
The project required the integration of new mechanical and hydraulic components into the existing EAF. The tilting mechanism, frame structures, and EMS system were precisely aligned with the furnace body and plant infrastructure. Dismantling, structural adaptation, reinstallation, and commissioning were completed within a tight four-week schedule. This process demanded flawless coordination and seamless collaboration among the design, manufacturing, and on-site teams.
Working in the confined furnace area, precise interface management, and the need for smart logistics increased the project’s complexity. All mechanical and hydraulic work was completed on time while fully maintaining safety, quality, and long-term reliability standards.
Modular approach enables fast installation
Primetals Technologies and Çolakoğlu Metalurji pre-assembled all new components using detailed 3D models and custom drawings. This modular pre-assembly significantly reduced on-site installation time and minimized interface adjustments.
As a result, the project was completed on schedule, delivering an exemplary modernization for brownfield plant upgrades in the steel industry. The new EAF system offers improved efficiency, ease of maintenance, mechanical stability, and long-term reliability.
