POSCO will provide steel slag for environmentally friendly asphalt production

Asphalt concrete company SG announced on May 30 that it will purchase steel slag from POSCO for the production of environmentally friendly asphalt concrete.

POSCO will provide steel slag for environmentally friendly asphalt production

Steelmaking slag is a by-product resulting from the melting of materials such as iron ore, bituminous coal and limestone at high temperatures during the iron production process. This slag replaces natural aggregate in asphalt concrete, preventing the destruction of forests and providing twice the strength compared to normal asphalt concrete. It is also distinguished by its fine dust and noise reduction effects.

Under this new agreement, SG will initially receive 100,000 tons of slag within the year. This will be converted into asphalt concrete worth about 28 billion won (about 21 million USD). The use of slag increases cost competitiveness by saving more than 5% compared to general aggregate costs. In the future, SG plans to gradually increase its slag supply with POSCO to 1 million tons (about 203 million USD).

POSCO, as Korea's largest steel producer, plays an active role in the recycling of by-products. Steel slag is recycled as part of environmentally friendly management strategies and contributes to sustainable production goals in the process. In February, 11 major steel companies, including POSCO and Hyundai Steel, strengthened their commitment in this area by participating in the inauguration of the Steel Slag Committee.

"This slag supply agreement with SG ensures stable raw material supply for Eco-Steel Ascon. We aim to actively increase our sales based on the excellent competitiveness of our products," said a POSCO official.
