In a statement released on 14 November, the company stated that the facility at its Pohang Works has restarted production after the completion of final repair activities.
The repair process was initiated after consecutive explosion and fire incidents that occurred on 10 and 24 November last year. With the completion of the repair works, which took approximately one year and one month, the facility has been brought back online.
The No. 3 FINEX facility produces molten iron using the FINEX process developed in-house by POSCO. Unlike conventional blast furnace operations, which require preliminary steps such as iron ore sintering and the conversion of bituminous coal into coke, the FINEX process eliminates these stages. Under this process, iron ore and bituminous coal are used directly in powdered form to produce molten iron. As a result, the production flow becomes more streamlined and the need for auxiliary facilities is reduced.
POSCO has been operating the No. 3 FINEX facility since 2014. The plant has an annual molten iron production capacity of approximately 2 million tonnes, accounting for around 10–12 percent of total molten iron output at the Pohang Works. With the facility resuming operations, production capacity in Pohang is expected to be significantly strengthened.
