POSCO holdings signs partnership with Australia’s CSİRO on critical minerals

POSCO Holdings has entered into a strategic partnership with Australia’s national science agency, CSİRO, to conduct joint research on low-carbon iron production and critical mineral refining technologies.

POSCO holdings signs partnership with Australia’s CSİRO on critical minerals

In May, the company became the first Korean firm to establish a dedicated research center in Australia, named the POSCO Australia Critical Minerals R&D Laboratory. On September 11, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with CSİRO to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals for the next five years.

The signing ceremony was held online between Korea and Australia, with the participation of POSCO Holdings N.EX.T Hub CTO and President Ki-soo Kim, CSİRO Mineral Resources Research Director Dr. Louise Fisher, and senior executives from both organizations.

The collaboration will focus on the following areas:

  • Low-carbon iron production technologies such as hydrogen reduction

  • Lithium refining and application technologies for secondary battery materials

  • Extraction and separation technologies for rare earth elements

Joint research projects, knowledge and sample sharing, regular communication channels, and annual technology exchange meetings will also be included in the cooperation framework.

POSCO Group CTO Dr. Ki-soo Kim stated, “This memorandum of understanding marks an important starting point for creating a strategic collaboration framework in low-carbon iron and critical minerals. By leveraging our synergies, we aim to stabilize the global critical minerals supply chain and contribute to a sustainable future.”

Dr. Louise Fisher, Director of CSİRO’s Mineral Resources Research unit, emphasized, “Our collaboration with POSCO Holdings will align our research priorities in low-emission iron production and critical minerals processing, supporting the development of a resilient and green metal industry in Australia.”

Founded in 1916, CSİRO operates more than 50 facilities worldwide with over 6,000 employees. Working closely with the Australian government and industry, the organization provides leading global research solutions in mineral exploration, efficient mining, and sustainable operations.
