Islamabad – 21 October 2025 – Pakistan Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has launched a new project called the Sea to Steel Green Maritime Industrial Corridor to revive the long-dormant Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). The initiative aims to reshape Pakistan’s industrial and maritime sectors by integrating ship recycling, steel manufacturing, and sustainable industrial practices into a single ecosystem.
Under the project, the Port Qasim Iron Ore and Coal Berth (IOCB), inactive since 2015, will be converted into a modern ship recycling and repair complex. The floating dock, capable of servicing Aframax-class vessels, will allow steel recovered from dismantled ships to be supplied to PSM or reprocessed at a new facility into high-grade industrial steel.
Minister Chaudhry stated that this approach will reduce dependence on imported raw materials, conserve foreign exchange, and support domestic steel and shipbuilding industries. Once implemented, steel imports are expected to decrease by 20 percent, potentially saving the country USD 13 billion over the next decade.
Officials attending the meeting emphasized that the ministry plans to complete the project in consultation with national agencies and international partners. Minister Chaudhry highlighted that the initiative will create thousands of new jobs and position Pakistan as a regional maritime-industrial hub.
