Pacific Steel breaks ground on first steel mill built in California in 50 years

Pacific Steel Group broke ground on the Mojave Micro Mill, the first steel mill built in California in 50 years. The facility, which was realized with an investment of USD 600 million in Kern County, will provide significant economic resources and employment to the region.

Spread over 174 acres, the facility will focus on the production of “green steel” by reprocessing old steel. This steel will be used in many infrastructure projects, including the rebuilding of Southern California.

“This means high-quality jobs that support families, build communities and create opportunities for generations,” said Kern County District 2 Supervisor Chris Parlier, noting that the facility will create more than 400 permanent jobs.

The plant's approximately 65 acres will be dedicated to renewable energy generation and a carbon capture system will filter carbon dioxide from emissions. “The steel we will produce at this plant will be 85-90% cleaner than other ribbed steel production around the world,” said Eric Benson, CEO of Pacific Steel Group, emphasizing the importance of the project in terms of sustainability.

The company said the abundance of renewable energy and the business-friendly environment in the region were decisive factors in choosing Mojave for investment.
