Ovako's EUR 9 million investment: A big step for sustainability

Ovako Group is not only enhancing energy efficiency with this investment, but also taking a significant step toward its sustainability goals. The benefits include the installation of a new exhaust gas filter, a continuous casting machine, and a vacuum degassing system, as well as the replacement of the 50-year-old compensator with Hitachi Energy's state-of-the-art SVC Light® STATCOM system. This modern system aims to significantly reduce energy and electrode consumption while increasing the efficiency of the electric arc furnace.

Marcus Hedblom, President and CEO of Ovako Group, stated; "This is a significant step for our vision of carbon-free steel production. By modernizing our Smedjebacken facility with advanced technologies like the SVC Light® system, we are not only increasing our production efficiency but also strengthening our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency."

This investment is highlighted as a testament to the company's commitment to sustainability in the steel industry. The use of advanced technologies helps to optimize production processes and reduce emissions. This is crucial for the future of the sector in terms of both environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness. Ovako's plan to complete this investment by summer 2026 demonstrates the company's commitment to its sustainability goals and its dedication to innovation.
