Nucor selects Primetals Technologies to modernize continuous casting line at Decatur plant

U.S. steel producer Nucor Corporation’s flat steel production facility, Nucor Steel Decatur, has signed an agreement with Primetals Technologies for the comprehensive modernization of its thin slab continuous casting line in Alabama.

Nucor selects Primetals Technologies to modernize continuous casting line at Decatur plant

According to the company’s statement, as part of the project, the segments of the continuous casting machine will be replaced with wider and more durable new frames. Together with an upgraded water spray system, the modernization aims to maintain current production and quality targets while enabling the future implementation of dynamic soft-core reduction technology. This is expected to improve the internal quality performance of the products.

The project marks the first thin slab continuous casting machine designed by Primetals Technologies within Nucor Corporation. All equipment will be manufactured, assembled, tested, and commissioned in the U.S. state of Alabama.

Over the next three years, Primetals Technologies will provide Nucor Steel Decatur with benders, continuous casting segments, and a spare parts inventory including backup rolls, hydraulic cylinders, and spray nozzles to support uninterrupted production.

Under the agreement, Primetals Technologies will also provide engineering services covering machine design, segment frames, roll systems, support structures, and secondary cooling systems. In addition, two new strand control systems and one lifting device will be installed. The company will continue to provide a comprehensive maintenance service agreement to improve equipment performance and extend its service life.

As part of the modernization, Nucor Steel Decatur’s continuous casting machine will be upgraded from a two-roll design to a three-roll design. This modification is expected to increase bearing load capacity by 50% and improve the durability of the system. The new frames will also be manufactured from marine-grade materials, enhancing corrosion resistance and extending equipment lifetime.

Nucor Steel Decatur produces hot-rolled, pickled and oiled, cold-rolled, galvanized, and galvannealed carbon steel sheet products. The Alabama facility has an annual flat steel production capacity of more than 3 million tonnes and supplies steel for infrastructure, energy, transportation, and construction projects across the United States.
