As one of the largest producers, Iran’s Mobarakeh Steel announced that it had achieved its best performance in crude steel production with an energy consumption of 22.25 gigajoules per ton, fully aligning with international standards. This achievement was highlighted as a strong indicator of the company’s commitment to sustainable production and environmental responsibility. In addition, Mobarakeh Steel reported that it has become the first company in Iran to receive international greenhouse gas management and product carbon footprint certificates.
A company representative emphasized that both natural resources and human expertise play a vital role in this success, stating:
“Iran’s vast and high-quality iron ore reserves give us a significant advantage in production. However, this alone is not enough. We combine this advantage with nearly 50 years of experience and the contributions of our highly skilled engineers. Our team is dedicated not only to production processes but also to advancing energy efficiency and sustainability. As a result, we are delivering a production model that serves as an example not only in our country but also globally.”
The representative also underlined the importance of the direct reduced iron (DRI) facilities:
“Our DRI plant is one of the most advanced Midrex-type facilities in the world. It was purchased from an American company nearly half a century ago and was designed to ensure high efficiency. Over the years, we have continuously enhanced it through modernization investments. Today, thanks to our natural gas–based system, we produce all reduction gas entirely from natural gas. This not only increases our production efficiency but also significantly reduces carbon emissions, representing a major environmental achievement.”
Mobarakeh Steel’s raw material mix also contributes to energy efficiency. The electric arc furnaces operate with a feed composed of 95% direct reduced iron (DRI) and 5% recycled steel scrap. The representative explained the benefits of this approach as follows:
“This ratio ensures both quality and efficiency. Our high DRI utilization enables us to produce cleaner, more homogeneous, and higher-quality steel. At the same time, the use of scrap supports the circular economy. In this way, we achieve production that surpasses global standards in terms of both cost and energy.”
