The company plans to take the Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2026, with construction expected to begin after the decision and the plant targeted to become operational in 2029. The project initially plans to use a mixture of natural gas and green hydrogen for production, gradually shifting to 85% green hydrogen.
MGS has completed the land allocation for the project, secured a conditional gas supply agreement, and established a local organization in Duqm.
A significant portion of the HBI to be produced will be used as raw material for MGS’s planned green flat steel facility in Rayong, Thailand, which will be the first green flat steel plant in Southeast Asia. The Thailand plant aims to produce low-carbon steel closer to end markets using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
