The agreement establishes a long-term contractual framework for the development of the project’s next stages and also covers financial, economic and development-related provisions.
The Aman project is targeted to produce around 1.2 million tons of green hydrogen and 6.6 million tons of green ammonia annually. The project is also expected to contribute to the development of the fertilizer industry, strengthen food security and support clean fuel supply. The development of new industrial areas linked to renewable energy is also among the project’s objectives.
Green steel production comes into focus
The project is expected to contribute to the development of Mauritania’s green steel industry and the domestic processing of iron ore. The development of green hydrogen production could provide an important energy source for the country’s plans to transform its iron ore resources into higher value-added products.
Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum Mohamed Ould Khaled said the agreement reflects international investors’ confidence in the country’s energy sector and establishes a comprehensive framework for the development of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects.
CWP Global Chairman Mark Grundall described the signing of the agreement as a “historic moment” for the company, Mauritania and the global green hydrogen derivatives sector.
Grundall said Mauritania is well positioned to supply new energy resources to global markets, adding that the Aman project has reached the FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) stage. The company aims to take the final investment decision before 2030.
Project development began in 2020
The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and CWP Global launched the Aman project in 2020 to capitalize on Mauritania’s renewable energy potential and strategic location.
The parties signed a memorandum of understanding in 2021, followed by a framework agreement in 2022 to establish the legal and regulatory basis of the partnership.
With the latest comprehensive agreement, the project moves into its next stage of development, with green hydrogen and ammonia production, as well as the potential for green steel and domestic iron ore processing, among its key components.
