Liberty Steel announces closure of Ostrava coke oven

Liberty Steel is closing one of the three furnaces at its Ostrava plant in the Czech Republic and there are growing expectations that the company may idle its last two operational blast furnaces in Europe in the coming months.

Liberty Steel announces closure of Ostrava coke oven

A spokesperson for Liberty refused to comment on rumours that blast furnaces in Ostrava and Galati, Romania, may remain idle due to working capital difficulties. Both of the furnaces are currently operational, but sources suggest that senior management is considering shutting down the units.

A spokesman for the group said they would close Ostrava's No. 11, the largest of the coke ovens, because it was highly inefficient and increasingly unprofitable due to overcapacity on the market.

"The government has so far failed to mitigate the effects of high energy prices and the highest inflation in Europe on our businesses, so we have been forced to take some decisive steps in the interest of the business," the spokesman said in a statement.
