Leyen warns of new tariffs against the US

European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen made important remarks on trade relations with the US and the new tariff discussions at the European Parliament Plenary Session in Strasbourg.

Leyen warns of new tariffs against the US

Ursula Von der Leyen spoke at the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg about the new tariffs imposed by the US and their impact on Europe.

Von der Leyen emphasized that the tariff war was not started by Europe and stated, “We think the tariffs are wrong. My message to you today is that we have everything we need to protect our people and our prosperity.” Noting that Europe is the largest single market and has the ability to negotiate against tariffs, von der Leyen stated, “We will always defend our interests and values.”

Reminding the 25% tariffs imposed by the US on products such as steel, aluminum, automobiles and auto parts, von der Leyen stated that industries could also turn to areas such as semiconductors, medicines and timber. She also emphasized that the US will announce “reciprocal tariffs” on almost all goods and that solutions should be found together to the problems that exist in the trade world.

“Tariffs will increase inflation,” she pointed to the negative effects of tariffs in general. Von der Leyen emphasized the importance of negotiation in the EU's strategy against tariffs and underlined that every option is on the table, saying, “We are ready to take countermeasures.”

Stating that she is in close contact with EU leaders, Von der Leyen stated that they will carefully evaluate the new US tariffs and aim to find a solution through negotiations. “If necessary, we will protect our interests, our people and our companies. We think that this confrontation is in no one's interest.”

Von der Leyen also stated that Europe did not initiate this conflict and has no intention to retaliate, but they have a strong plan if necessary. In addition, she said they will continue their efforts to diversify trade and deepen the single market further.
