The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has announced that it has given "Stop Work" orders to two steel and iron manufacturing companies in the state's Ikorodu region.
The order was issued following environmental violations and unsafe working conditions observed in companies, LASEPA spokesperson Bola Ajao said in a statement.
Affected companies are Sun flag and Top Steel, both located in the Odonla community in Ikorodu.
Ms. Ajao said the agency has also issued a warning note to other steel and iron manufacturing companies operating in the axis to ensure that their activities comply with the government's environmental standards.
Adedolapo Fasawe, Managing Director of LASEPA, who led the implementation team at the two companies, denounced the unsafe working conditions as workers were observed to carry out their duties with minimal risk control to staff, surrounding communities and even the government in general.
The LASEPA boss described the companies' situation as "serious", referring to the negative impact on the vulnerable population in the community, particularly children and the elderly, who are affected by "massive abuse of the communal environment".
