Last week, a technical meeting held in Amman brought together transport officials from Jordan, Syria, and Turkey to discuss strategic steps to enhance regional cooperation. The outcomes of the meeting were documented in a joint report to be submitted to the transport ministers of the three countries.
Key points discussed included reopening the Bab al-Hawa–Cilvegözü border crossing to Jordanian trucks once technical requirements are met, reviving the historic Hejaz Railway in Syria with Turkey’s support, and Jordan providing technical assistance for the maintenance of Syrian locomotives. The countries also agreed to launch joint feasibility studies for a modern railway network connecting the three nations to international trade corridors.
The meeting also focused on strengthening road freight routes from Jordan’s Aqaba Port through Syria to Turkey and establishing regional land bridges for goods heading to Eastern Europe. Officials emphasized that these projects would significantly enhance trade and logistics capacity, particularly in Syria’s ongoing reconstruction process.
Industry representatives highlighted that improved infrastructure would play a critical role in regional supply chains, especially for construction materials and steel. However, despite the lifting of sanctions, some banks continue to face challenges in accepting invoices.
Officials underlined the strategic importance of translating strong diplomatic ties into tangible economic projects and noted that enhanced transport connectivity would increase regional trade and investment opportunities.
