Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of Jindal Steel Group, announced it will build a second hydrogen-ready direct reduction (DRI) plant in the Duqm Special Economic Zone in the Al Wusta region of Oman. The company confirmed that the order has been placed with Italian engineering firm Danieli.
According to the announcement, the new plant will be equipped with Energiron technology, developed by Tenova and Danieli, and will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons of direct reduced iron. The produced hot iron will be briquetted into hot briquetted iron (HBI), making it suitable for both storage and export.
Danieli stated that the plant will operate with Zero-Reformer technology and achieve an average metallization rate of 94%. The hybrid design will allow operation using natural gas as well as up to 80% hydrogen, and a carbon capture unit will be integrated as part of the system.
The company broke ground on its green steel complex in Duqm in November 2023 with a $3 billion investment. The first plant is scheduled to start operations in 2026, and with the completion of the second plant, total capacity is expected to reach 5 million tons annually.
