India considers expanding steel protection duty

India is considering expanding the import tariff, known as a “protection duty,” on certain steel products, aimed particularly at balancing cheap steel imports from China.

India considers expanding steel protection duty

According to sources familiar with the matter, the Indian government is working on new regulations to protect the domestic steel sector and reduce import pressure.

As the world’s second-largest crude steel producer, India in August proposed a three-year import tariff of 11–12% on certain steel products, following the final findings of the federal Directorate General of Trade Remedies. These tariffs cover flat and long steel products as well as some specialty steel items, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of domestic producers.

A source speaking to Reuters, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, stated, “The tariff is still under review.” The Indian government had previously tested these measures; in April, a temporary 12% tariff was applied for 200 days, but this temporary measure ended earlier this month.
