Hydra project will provide advantages to steel producers

Italian-based consultancy RINA announced the launch of a six-year research project called Hydra.

Hydra project will provide advantages to steel producers

The project to build a 100 per cent hydrogen-fuelled steelmaking pilot plant is worth €88 million and is also supported by the European Commission as an IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) project.

The Hydra project aims to produce up to seven tonnes of different grades of steel per hour, using hydrogen at every stage of steelmaking.

Ugo Salerno, president and managing director of RINA, said: "Hydra is not designed or intended to provide a commercial advantage to any steelmaker; rather it is designed to move the industry and the world forward in the utilisation of 100% hydrogen production at close to zero value."

The pilot plant is expected to be completed by 2025. The planned plant will include a 30 metre high direct iron ore reduction (DRI) tower, an electric furnace (EAF) and a reheat furnace using hydrogen as the reducing agent.
