This machine, the most powerful of its kind in the world, is capable of producing ultra-thick slabs up to 460 millimeters thick. This enables Wuyang to meet the growing demands of high value-added industries such as offshore wind power, nuclear power steel, pressure vessels and engineering machinery.
Leading Efficiency and Innovation
By partially replacing the traditional ingot casting method with this advanced continuous caster, Wuyang Iron and Steel will significantly reduce its operational costs while producing challenging steel grades. The HBIS Wuyang and Primetals Technologies teams will continue to collaborate to develop new steel grades on the ultra-thick slab caster in the coming years, while successfully bringing the project to fruition on a tight schedule. The partnership aims to expand the portfolio of high-end steel products to meet the changing needs of the energy, infrastructure and heavy machinery sectors.
The caster is equipped with an innovative method from Primetals Technologies to set the ideal casting-cylinder geometry from the design stage. This approach reduces unbalanced bulging by 50%, resulting in higher casting speeds and productivity. In addition, Primetals Technologies' Smart Segment concept and Eco-Star cylinders are equipped with advanced cooling system to significantly improve slab surface quality during dry casting.
Wuyang Iron and Steel, a subsidiary of HBIS Group, is a leading producer of wide and thick steel plates in China. The company, which also houses a major research center in the industry, operates two advanced double bench production lines. The new single-row slab caster is capable of producing ultra-thick slabs up to 460 millimeters thick, further cementing Wuyang's technology leadership.
