Pointing out that hard coal is only found in the Zonguldak Hard Coal Basin in Turkey, Hakan Yeşil noted that the industry is a strategic product, which is the main raw material of the iron and steel industry, with its coking feature.
Hard coal production slowed down
Referring to the importance of the TTK in meeting Turkey's hard coal needs, especially in the iron and steel sector, Yeşil said, “With the developing industry, our country's demand for hard coal has increased, however, the hard coal production of the basin has decreased as a result of the failure to create the necessary production structure due to the wrong mining and import-based economic policies.”
Emphasizing that Turkey's annual hard coal consumption is approximately 38.2 million tons as of today, Yeşil said, “1.2 million tons of consumption is met by domestic production and an average of 37 million tons by imports. Billions of dollars are spent every year for hard coal imports in Turkey.
Domestic production is important in hard coal
Green, who said that the changes in the global coal markets, supply difficulties and the resulting increase in coal prices have revealed the importance of domestic production, gave the following explanations; It should be necessary to meet a large part of the needs of the iron and steel industry and to reduce foreign dependency in these sectors by contributing to the energy sector, and also to ensure the employment of the people of the region in the basin and thus the continuation of the existing mining culture in the region, and policies for the region should be formed within the framework of these objectives.
