According to data from the World Steel Association (worldsteel), global crude steel production decreased 1.3% in July 2025 compared to the same period last year, declined to 150.1 million tons. In the January–July period, total production decreased by 1.9% as yearly. In Asia, particularly in China, production cuts and weak demand remark, while in Europe, economic stagnation continued to weigh on output. Geopolitical uncertainty persisted in Russia and surrounding regions, while different movements were observed in the America.
In China, production decreased 4% in July to 79.7 million tons, while India moved against the global trend with a 14% increase, reaching 14 million tons. In the European Union, output decreased 7% to 10.2 million tons, and in the CIS and Ukraine region, production decreased 5.1% to 6.7 million tons. The Middle East recorded a significant increase of 27.7%, producing 4.4 million tons. In North America, production increased 5.8% to 9.4 million tons, where as South America saw a 4.5% declined, decreased to 3.6 million tons.
The decline in production was driven by weak demand in Europe, ongoing production cuts in China, U.S. import tariffs, rising energy costs, and uncertainties in raw material supply. Worldsteel data shows that the downward trend in global steel production continued into the summer months. However, India’s strong production growth and the increase in output from the Middle East have increased the possibility of a balancing effect on global production.
