According to data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the 70 countries reporting to the association produced a total of 155.7 million mt of crude steel in June.
Following a 0.3% decline recorded in May, global crude steel production returned to a growth trend in June. The increase was mainly driven by higher production in the European Union, North America and Türkiye, while the decline in the CIS region, including Russia, as well as the Middle East, stood out.
On a regional basis, Africa's crude steel production increased by 20.0% year on year to 2.2 million mt in June. Production in Asia and Oceania rose by 1.5% to 115.2 million mt. In the European Union (EU-27), production increased by 4.6% to 10.8 million mt, while production in the rest of Europe rose by 10.4% to 3.7 million mt.
Crude steel production in the Middle East declined to 4.0 million mt in June, down 13.4% year on year. Production in North America increased by 5.0% to 9.5 million mt. In the region comprising Russia, the other CIS countries and Ukraine, production decreased by 2.2% to 6.8 million mt. Meanwhile, South America's crude steel production edged down by 0.3% to 3.5 million mt.
On a country basis, China produced 83.7 million mt of crude steel in June, up 0.4% compared to the same month last year. India's production increased by 4.5% to 14.1 million mt, while US output rose by 3.5% to 7.2 million mt. Japan's crude steel production increased by 1.3% to 6.8 million mt.
Russia's crude steel production in June is estimated at 5.6 million mt, indicating a 3.4% year-on-year decline. South Korea's production fell by 0.9% to 5.3 million mt.
Türkiye produced 3.3 million mt of crude steel in June, recording one of the strongest increases among major producers with a 14.7% year-on-year rise. Germany's production increased by 9.5% to 2.9 million mt, while Brazil produced 2.8 million mt, up 0.1% year on year. Vietnam recorded one of the highest annual growth rates, with production rising by 27.5% to 2.6 million mt.
