Germany Prime Minister warns EU on Steel Industry Measures

Germany Prime Minister Olaf Scholz presented a three-step plan to rescue and secure the country's steel industry for the long term.

Germany Prime Minister warns EU on Steel Industry Measures

Germany Prime Minister Olaf Scholz emphasized that steel accompanied Germany industry for centuries and that it is crucial to preserve steel production in the country in the long term.

Scholz stated that three main steps should be taken to ensure environmentally friendly steel production. Firstly, stating that reliable electricity prices are a critical need for the steel industry, Scholz emphasized that the entire value chain in production should be integrated into sustainability objectives. Scholz noted that steel producers developed alternative projects to blast furnaces to save carbon emissions and that these projects are encouraged with billions of euros of government support.

On the third point, the Germany Prime Minister stated Europe's steel sector needs to be protected against low-priced imports and he urged the EU Commission to take more stringent measures. “We need a stronger defense to protect Europe,” he emphasized.

Prime Minister Olaf Scholz held a meeting with steel industry leaders, works council representatives, and trade union leaders in Berlin on December 9. The meeting discussed how to overcome challenges such as high energy prices, Asian competition especially from China, and the slowing decarbonization process.

Olaf Scholz also did not directly reject the possibility of the state joining Thyssenkrupp. “I am not taking any option off the table,” he said in response to a question about a related question.
