The ceremony was attended by senior representatives from the governments of India and Andhra Pradesh, along with ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal and CEO, as well as AM/NS India Chairman Aditya Mittal.
The new plant has been designed as a low-cost, highly competitive integrated steel facility with a capacity of 8.2 million tonnes, in line with ArcelorMittal’s long-term growth strategy in India. The Rajayyapeta facility will increase India’s domestic steel production capacity and produce high-quality, value-added steel products. It is expected to create more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Thanks to its coastal location and connectivity via an existing slurry pipeline to some of India’s richest iron ore deposits, the plant will be one of the country’s lowest-cost and most competitive facilities. Steel production activities are planned to commence in the first quarter of 2029, with other units to be commissioned in phases. The total investment is expected to exceed ₹70,000 crore (approximately $7.5–8 billion), and the investment will be implemented in phases.
ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized that the partnership with India marks the beginning of a new era, stating: “I am proud to bring to life this project, which will demonstrate that world-class steel production supports sustainable growth and national self-sufficiency. I hope this facility will have a transformative impact on local communities and the state of Andhra Pradesh.”
Aditya Mittal, Chairman of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India and CEO of ArcelorMittal, noted that steel forms the backbone of life, adding: “This plant will be one of India’s most competitive and modern steel facilities. Its coastal location and easy connectivity to iron ore resources via the existing slurry pipeline will enable it to serve the entire region and customers across India. Safety will always be our top priority during construction, and upon completion, this facility will further strengthen AM/NS India’s leading position in the country.”
The new factory will play a critical role in India’s journey toward achieving its 2030–31 target of 300 million tonnes of crude steel capacity. The project will also strengthen ArcelorMittal’s presence in the Indian market in line with the strong long-term demand outlook supported by infrastructure, urbanization, and industrial development.
