The collaboration aims to explore the potential of fossil-free materials in demanding automotive applications by combining SSAB's pioneering role in carbon-free steel production with Polmotors' experience in manufacturing components for leading automotive manufacturers.
Maciej Graboś, CEO of Polmotors, stated: "At Polmotors, we see the future of fossil-free steel and believe that early action in this area will give us a competitive advantage. Material selection is of great importance in the production of safety-critical parts such as collision management systems (CMS). We therefore look forward to joint R&D projects with SSAB and OEMs on the applications of the new steel grades."
Robert Lewandowski, Key Account Sales Manager of SSAB, noted that he witnessed the development process of Polmotors and stated: "It has been a great privilege to watch Polmotors, which I knew as a local business 20 years ago, transform into a Tier 1 supplier on a global scale. Decarbonization of the automotive industry requires a joint effort across the entire supply chain and the role of Tier 1 suppliers in this process is critical."
SSAB is among the pioneering companies aiming to reduce carbon emissions in steel production to zero. The company successfully launched SSAB Zero™, which is made from recycled steel and processed with fossil-free energy, and successfully produced the world's first fossil-free steel. This was made possible thanks to a new production process developed by SSAB in collaboration with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall as part of the HYBRIT initiative, which replaces traditional coke with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen.
Fossil-free steel has the potential to revolutionize the industry by reducing carbon emissions in steel production to almost zero. This partnership between SSAB and Polmotors is considered an important step towards pioneering sustainability in the automotive industry.
