Australia-based metals and mining company Fortescue Metals plans to purchase more than 100 pieces of zero-emission electric heavy equipment for its mining operations in the Pilbara region by 2030 under an agreement with Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer XCMG.
The contract, with a potential value in excess of USD 400 million, is XCMG's largest mining equipment contract outside China.
The equipment will be deployed from 2026 and will save millions of litres of fossil fuel over their operational lifetime, Fortescue said. This is seen as an important step towards achieving the company's goal of eliminating Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions by 2030.
