First fully automatic HDRI electric arc furnace launched in partnership between SMS and SULB

At SULB’s facility in Bahrain, the electric arc furnace using 100% Hot Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) has been fully automated with SMS group’s Condoor system. This technology enables safe, efficient, and operator-free slag removal.

First fully automatic HDRI electric arc furnace launched in partnership between SMS and SULB

SULB, a leading steel producer in Bahrain, has successfully implemented SMS group’s Condoor technology. For the first time in the world, an electric arc furnace (EAF) operating with 100% Hot Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) is performing fully automatic slag removal.

According to SMS group, the Condoor system safely and precisely handles slag in the EAF without the need for operator intervention. This advancement improves workplace safety, reduces energy consumption, and increases production efficiency when combined with HDRI use.

The project began with an order placed in February 2023. The first heat was achieved in August 2024, and the final acceptance was granted in June 2025. Throughout this process, SMS group provided continuous technical and engineering support to tailor the system to SULB’s requirements.

Andrea Lanari, Vice President of Metallurgy at SMS group, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “We have brought to life the concept of fully automatic slag management on an HDRI EAF for the first time. This innovation enhances both performance and safety. We will continue applying this successful approach in all new furnace projects across Europe.”
