Eti Bakır is preparing a USD 200 million pellet iron investment in Mazıdağı

Cengiz Holding’s company Eti Bakır, at the Mazıdağı Metal Recovery and Integrated Fertilizer Facilities, pellet iron production stands out among the planned new investments.

The company aims to convert the iron concentrate recovered from pyrite into high-purity pellet iron thanks to a new facility to be established with a USD 200 million investment.

Bekir Kan, Plant Manager of the Mazıdağı Metal Recovery and Integrated Fertilizer Facilities of Eti Bakır, stated that approximately 350,000 tons of iron concentrate are processed annually at the Mazıdağı facilities and that this output will be taken to a more advanced stage. Kan said, “We will process the 350,000 tons of iron concentrate we recover annually from pyrite one step further and turn it into pellet iron with 95% purity. The facility we will establish for pellet iron, which is the raw material of products such as rebar and sheet, will be located on an area of 150,000 square meters and will be completed within 3 years.”

Emphasizing that the investment in question will be entirely for the domestic market, Kan stated that pellet iron production will fill an important gap in Türkiye’s raw material needs. With the commissioning of the new facility, it is aimed both to provide a critical input to the industry and to keep the added value within the country.

Cobalt end products will be produced for the first time in Türkiye

The company’s investments in Mazıdağı are not limited to iron. Eti Bakır is simultaneously preparing to produce cobalt end products in Türkiye for the first time with an investment of USD 20 million.

Within this scope, it is planned to produce products such as cobalt acetate, cobalt chloride and cobalt nitrate. It is foreseen that a large portion of the cobalt salts, corresponding to 2,000 tons of metal annually, will be directed to exports.

Kan also stated regarding cobalt production, “At our Mazıdağı facility, we recover cobalt from pyrite, which is a by-product of our copper processes, and we meet nearly 2% of the world production in this field.”

With the commissioning of both investments, it is expected that the current employment of 1,690 people at the facility will increase to 1,900. The company positions the Mazıdağı facility as not only a production center but also a strategic structure where value-added products are developed with a circular economy model.
