EMSTEEL's strong emphasis on sustainability

The panel titled “Insights From Technology Providers, Users and Analysts in Green Steel” attracted great interest at MENA Steel Forum 2025, one of the key events shaping the MENA region's green transformation in the steel industry. Speaking at the panel, EMSTEEL Group ESG and Sustainability Manager Manal Al Badawi shared the company's sustainability strategies with the participants.

EMSTEEL's strong emphasis on sustainability

Al Badawi emphasized the importance of transition to renewable energy sources in green steel production and stated, “Transition to renewable electricity through in-house PPA models in line with COP28 targets is the first step of the green steel journey in the MENA region.” Noting that EMSTEEL's sustainability vision targets not only environmental but also economic and social transformation, Al Badawi emphasized the company's commitment in this field.

With more than 15 years of industry experience, Al Badawi holds dual master's degrees in petroleum engineering and health-safety-environmental engineering. He also holds a CFA ESG certificate and is a qualified quality, health, safety and environmental auditor.

In addition to EMSTEEL Group, experts from different companies made evaluations on the latest technologies at the panel. Soroush Basirat, Energy Financial Analyst from the Institute for Energy and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), Robert Montgomery, Senior Plant Sales Manager for Middle East at Midrex Technologies, Leonardo Tamez, Technical Sales Manager at Tenova HYL, and Fabio Muscolino, Sales Manager Ironmaking at SMS Group were among the other presenters.

Moderated by Karim Badr, Technical Director of Ironmaking at RHI Magnesita, the panel discussed topics such as hydrogen-based direct reduction (HDR), electric arc furnaces (EAF), carbon capture technologies (CCS) and sustainable production models. The panelists emphasized the need for steel producers to develop policies in line with global climate targets.
