Egypt will offer 8 new licenses for 2.8 million tons of billet production

Egypt’s Industrial Development Authority has announced that it will offer 8 new production licenses for continuous casting billet production with a total annual capacity of 2.8 million tons, with the aim of increasing domestic production capacity in the country’s iron and steel sector and reducing dependence on imports.

Egypt will offer 8 new licenses for 2.8 million tons of billet production

The new licensing program announced by the Industrial Development Authority will be implemented as part of the Egyptian Ministry of Industry’s strategy to ensure that the production inputs required by local factories are supplied domestically. The program aims to deepen local industry and strengthen value chains in the iron and steel sector.

2.8 million tons of capacity through 8 licenses

Dr. Nahed Youssef, Chairman of the Industrial Development Authority, stated that the licenses are particularly aimed at increasing the domestic production of continuous casting billets required by national rolling mills.

Under the program, 4 licenses, each with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons, and 4 licenses, each with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons, will be offered.

Thus, the total annual production capacity that could be created under the 8 new licenses will reach 2.8 million tons.

The new capacity is expected to contribute to meeting the basic raw material requirements of rolling mills in the country, while the program also aims to reduce dependence on imports, save foreign currency, and enhance the investment competitiveness of Egypt’s iron and steel sector.

Local value chains in the metal sector to be strengthened

Youssef stated that, in line with the directives of the Ministry of Industry, they are working to strengthen industrial integration in the metal industry.

In this context, the aim is to encourage investments in basic and complementary industries, ensure sustainability in production inputs, and increase the added value generated within the country.

Egyptian authorities also stated that the necessary facilities will be provided to remove obstacles faced by companies seeking to invest in the iron and steel sector and to attract new investments to the country.

Applications to open on August 11

The Industrial Development Authority announced that companies wishing to participate in the licensing tender can obtain the terms and conditions and technical specifications documents from the Authority’s headquarters in the Fifth Settlement between August 11 and 20, 2026.

The deadline for submitting bids has been set as Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 12:00 noon.

The Authority also stated that applications submitted to it prior to the aforementioned tender process will not be taken into consideration.
