Disco officially starts rebar production in Zimbabwe

With the start of finished steel production at Disco's South African plant, Zimbabwe aims to reduce its dependence on steel imports and become a regional supply hub.

Disco officially starts rebar production in Zimbabwe

According to the Chronicle, Zimbabwe has taken a critical step towards industrialization with the full-scale production of finished steel at the Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco), a subsidiary of Tsingshan Holding Group, located in Manhize district. With a daily production capacity of 300 tons, the plant aims to support the domestic market and reduce imports with an annual production target of 600,000 tons.

Disco has started to produce various finished steel products, primarily ribbed rebar with diameters of 16 mm, 20 mm and 25 mm. The aim is to offer the products in the local market at more affordable prices than imported alternatives.

Employment, Energy and Infrastructure Investment

The facility, which employs approximately 2,000 people, also contributes to regional infrastructure development. Disco has built a power plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts for production activities; 24 megawatts are currently in active use. Excess energy will be transferred to the national grid after regulatory approvals. There are also plans to invest in wind energy in the region.

Long Term Vision: Smart City and University

Disco's investment plan is not limited to steel. A science university and a “Smart City” project are also on the agenda in Manhize. These steps are aimed at diversifying Zimbabwe's economy in sectors other than agriculture and mining.

Disco officials say that these investments will make Zimbabwe a regional steel supply center and that the country is on its way to becoming a player in the global steel industry.
