As part of the project, a 1.3 MW electric Process Gas Heater (e-PGH) will be integrated into the existing Energiron DRI process developed by Tenova and Danieli. This will mark the first industrial-scale application of direct electric heating for process gas.
The pilot facility is based on Prothal® DH technology — a compact and modular electric heating solution designed by Danieli and Kanthal for high-efficiency operation. The system is planned to operate in parallel with the existing fired heater.
Installation and commissioning are scheduled for 2026. The project is supported by Khalifa University, which will conduct analyses on the DRI core process, grid impact and renewable energy variability.
This initiative will contribute to the gradual decarbonization of direct reduction plants while reinforcing Danieli’s roadmap toward fossil-free steel production.
