Çolakoğlu Metalurji, not only one of Türkiye’s but also one of Europe’s leading producers, ranks 14th among Türkiye’s 500 largest industrial enterprises. Exporting to more than 150 countries, the steel giant is positioned as one of the few manufacturers in Türkiye capable of producing both flat and long products.Stating that they have an annual production capacity of 4.5 million tons of hot rolled coil and 1 million tons of rebar, Çolakoğlu Metalurji Sales and Marketing Director Gökhan Erdem stated that:“At our two facilities in Dilovası, Kocaeli, thanks to the advanced technologies we possess, we produce a wide range of products from ultra low carbon steels to high strength steels, and from special oil pipe steels to complex phase steels. With the flat steels we manufacture, we make significant contributions to many sectors such as automotive, wheel production, machinery manufacturing, oil and pipe drilling, construction, and agricultural equipment, while our rebar products ensure reliable supply to the construction industry.”
We aim to close 2025 with 3 million tons of exports
Erdem noted that they produce both semi-finished and finished product groups including slab, billet, hot rolled flat steel coil, and rebar for reinforced concrete and highlighted their strong performance in exports.
Erdem recalled that they have exported to more than 150 countries to date and stated that their ultimate goal is to make Turkish steel widespread across the world and increase its global market share. He continued his assessment of the current state of exports and external markets with the following remarks:
“In 2024 and 2025, our activities expanded across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and North America. We were active in more than 35 countries, including the UK, Germany, the US, Spain, Egypt, Romania, Bulgaria, Norway, and Australia. We aim to close 2025 with more than 3 million tons of exports.”
We are committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050
Emphasizing that they operate with the vision of ‘giving life to the steel of the future’, Gökhan Erdem said, “In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we advance on the pillars of responsible production, valuing people and society, sustainable growth, and corporate resilience.” He continued:
“By integrating our green steel vision and ambitious zero emission targets with digitalization, we aim to be one of the pioneers of transformation in the Turkish steel industry. Our company is committed to reducing its emissions by 55% by 2030 and reaching ‘net-zero emissions’ by 2050. This goal is not only an environmental responsibility but also a strategic vision that enhances our company’s competitiveness.” Erdem noted that they are also taking ambitious steps in social sustainability, recalling that they aim to increase the share of women employees to 25% by 2030.
The sluggish past two years have accelerated transformation investments
Erdem stated that after the steel industry’s turbulent 2024, the sector continued to struggle with demand contraction in 2025 as well. He said:“In 2024, China and other Far Eastern countries targeting Türkiye as a key market created unfair pressure on domestic producers. This led to supply demand imbalances and price volatility in the local market. The year 2025 followed a similar pattern. Despite global uncertainties and shrinking demand, the Turkish steel sector maintained its resilience. Domestic producers, drawing strength from the previous year’s experience, improved efficiency in their production processes. Throughout 2025, innovative investments, green transformation projects, and digitalization initiatives accelerated across the sector, further strengthening the Turkish steel industry’s position in global competition. As Çolakoğlu Metalurji, we participated in national and international fairs throughout 2024 and 2025, showcasing our products and contributing to the global competitiveness of the Turkish steel sector.”
Turkey has an advantage thanks to the electric arc furnace
Gökhan Erdem, Sales and Marketing Director of Çolakoğlu Metalurji, said:“As a company Çolakoğlu Metalurji, we have developed our dynamic roadmap by operating with an innovative approach focused on product management, offering steel products with the most ideal properties and high added value. In this context, in 2023, we implemented projects that contribute to our sustainable growth through efficiency improvements such as the hot strip mill development and capacity expansion investments, digitalization projects, the S4HANA Project, steam fan capacity increase, and the RGL system and further strengthened our leading position in the industry.”
Gökhan Erdem, stating that decarbonization is a significant transformation process for both the global and Turkish steel sectors, highlighted the advantages of the electric arc furnace (EAF) production method, which is widely used in Turkey. Emphasizing that Çolakoğlu Metalurji has further strengthened this advantage through the use of renewable energy and technologies that reduce carbon emissions, Erdem said:“Policies such as the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) create an important transformation opportunity for the sector. In line with this, we are focusing on technological investments and advancements to achieve our carbon-neutral targets. We believe that these investments will accelerate an environmentally focused and effective transformation in Turkey’s sustainability journey, highlighting companies in our sector that adopt a responsible production approach.”
