According to data released on Friday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), pig iron output in July dropped 1.4% month-on-month to 70.80 million mt, crude steel output fell 4% to 79.66 million mt, and finished steel output declined 1.4% to 122.95 million mt.
Compared to the same period last year, these figures represent a 6.4% increase in pig iron output, a 4% decrease in crude steel output, and a 1.4% decrease in finished steel output. Average daily crude steel production fell 7.3% to 2.57 million mt in July from 2.77 million mt in June.
In the January–July period, China’s total pig iron output reached 505.83 million mt, crude steel output stood at 594.47 million mt, and finished steel output was 860.47 million mt — marking year-on-year changes of -1.3%, -3.1%, and +5.1%, respectively.
Analysts noted that high temperatures and heavy rainfall disrupted outdoor construction activity, reducing demand for steel products and negatively impacting production. The decline is also seen as a result of measures taken following Beijing’s March pledge to tackle overcapacity and restructure the sector.
