According to the data of China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for the first half of 2025, crude steel production in the country decreased compared to the previous year. In the January-June 2025 period, China's total crude steel production decreased by 3% to 514.83 million tons.
In June, the decrease was even more pronounced. The country produced 83.18 million tons of crude steel in June 2025, a 9.2% decrease compared to the same month last year.
Officials attributed the decline in steel production to weaker finished steel prices during the summer months and lower end-user demand. It is also stated that many steel producers prioritized maintenance works and slowed down their production activities during the summer period due to weak market conditions.
Pig iron production followed a similar course. In June, China's pig iron production decreased by 4.1% y/y to 71.91 million tons. In the first six months of the year, total pig iron production decreased by 0.8% to 434.68 million tons.
On the other hand, finished steel production increased. In June, finished steel production increased by 1.8% to 127.84 million tons. In the January-June 2025 period, finished steel production increased by 4.6% to 734.38 million tons.
