China’s crude steel production decreased at end of august

According to data from the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), the country’s iron and steel output declined in the last ten days of august 2025.

China’s crude steel production decreased at end of august

During this period, major steel enterprises produced a total of 21.41 million tons of crude steel. The average daily output stood at 1.947 million tons, marking an 8% decrease compared to the previous period. Pig iron production reached 20.10 million tons, with a daily average of 1.827 million tons, down 5.1% month over month. In contrast, finished steel production increased to 23.52 million tons, with a daily average of 2.138 million tons — a 4.4% rise compared to the previous period.

Estimates show that nationwide, daily crude steel production during the last ten days of August was 2.42 million tons, representing a 9.5% monthly decrease. Daily pig iron production declined by 5.3% to 2.20 million tons, while finished steel output dropped by 0.6% to 4.15 million tons.

Officials stated that the temporary increase in finished steel production was due to end-of-month stock entries and accounting adjustments. When these factors are excluded, finished steel production actually decreased by 1.1%.

It was also emphasized that temporary production restrictions imposed in regions such as Tianjin and Hebei for national events limited the capacity of certain large enterprises and accelerated the overall decline in sector output.
