China will reduce the share of the construction industry

China has announced a development plan for the construction industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) to make the pillars of the country's economy greener, smarter and safer. China will reduce the share of the construction industry

China has unveiled a development plan for the construction industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) to make the pillars of the country's economy greener, smarter and safer. According to the statement of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the construction sector will hold 6 percent of the country's GDP until 2025.

The Plan states that the industry will modernize the industrial chain to a greater extent, form the preliminary stages of a green and low-carbon production mode, see more widespread application of information technology, and steadily improve the safety and quality of buildings.

Specifically, prefabricated buildings that are partly or wholly manufactured in factories and then transported to construction sites for assembly will account for more than 30 percent of the country's new construction. Building waste at new construction sites will be less than 300 tons per 10 thousand square meters.

The government will promote the use of information technologies such as the Internet of Things and big data in the construction industry, by promoting cooperation between construction companies, internet businesses and research institutes.

The plan underlines the mass implementation of construction robots in some areas by 2025. Efforts will be made to promote robots that produce parts, accelerate research and development on site robots, and explore application scenarios for robots used for operation and maintenance.

Looking ahead to 2035, the plan predicts that the construction industry will realize extensive industrialization, with major improvements in the quality of buildings and business-innovation capability, while demonstrating world-leading competitiveness, particularly in the field of smart construction.

China's construction industry has played an increasingly important role in boosting the economy and stabilizing employment. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), the sector grew 5.1 percent annually in value added, exceeding 6.9 percent of GDP. In 2020, the sector provided employment to 53.66 million people.
