China suspended production in some factories

China's struggle with the worst heat wave in 60 years adds to the economic problems in the country.

Authorities demanded that factories in some major cities temporarily halt production.
In Sichuan, one of the important industrial areas with more than 80 million people, the authorities announced that production will be stopped until Saturday to prioritize the public's use of electricity. The state of Sichuan has the world's largest electronics companies, such as Apple's supplier Foxconn and Intel.

It has been announced that the use of air conditioners will be prioritized in electricity consumption in some other regions of the country.

This development shows that climate change has increased the difficulties in the country's economy. Authorities warn that this year's growth target of 5.5 percent may not be reached, as the coronavirus pandemic has hit commerce and daily life.

Jin Xiandong, spokesperson of the National Development and Reform Commission, said in a statement yesterday that hydraulic power production has decreased due to the heat wave and drought, and that the country will use coal resources more for electricity generation.

Due to the worsening of climate change, the heat wave is expected to become more widespread. At the weekend, the temperature in Sichuan had risen to a record 44 degrees.
