ÇEMTAŞ aims to reduce carbon emissions by 26% by the end of 2024

ÇEMTAŞ, one of Türkiye's leading steel producers, stands out with its innovative and transformative approach with more than 50 years of experience in the sector. Focusing on keeping carbon emissions low by using electric arc furnaces, the company demonstrates its commitment to environmental sustainability with the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 26% by the end of 2024.

Today, when the fight against climate change is at the forefront, ÇEMTAŞ acts in awareness of its responsibility in steel production. The company produces steel from scrap using an electric arc furnace and focuses on keeping carbon emissions at a lower level compared to conventional blast furnaces. However, it has taken measures to further increase its responsibility in the fight against climate change, a global problem.

KEY TARGETS FOR GREEN STEEL TRANSFORMATION

ÇEMTAŞ, which attracted attention with its work under the umbrella of sustainability in 2021, determined the carbon emission values and managed to obtain an A grade with the answers it gave in the climate change program of the international independent organization CDP.

Setting basic targets for green steel transformation, ÇEMTAŞ's priorities include consuming less energy, reducing waste and providing all energy consumption from renewable sources. Efficiency-enhancing investments and waste heat utilization systems stand out in the efforts initiated to achieve these goals.

ÇEMTAŞ plans to use this energy in various areas, especially with new investments made to utilize waste heat and steam. In addition, the company aims to increase efficiency through equipment renewal efforts and aims to optimize energy consumption by replacing equipment such as electric motors with new generation and more efficient ones.

CARBON EMISSIONS DECREASED BY 1% IN 2023

Considering that steel production is an energy-intensive process, ÇEMTAŞ's renewable energy investments also attract attention. The company managed to reduce carbon emissions by 1% with its rooftop solar energy (SPP) investment, which was completed in 2023. This decrease is aimed to continue with the second rooftop solar power plant investment, which is planned to be completed in 2024. In addition, with the solar power plant investment to be made on a purchased land, carbon emissions will be reduced by 26% by the end of 2024 and half of the electricity will be met from renewable sources.

HALF OF THE ELECTRICITY WILL BE PROVIDED FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES

ÇEMTAŞ's goals for 2030 include meeting all its electricity needs from renewable sources, reducing carbon emissions by 60% and continuing energy efficiency projects. In addition, the targets set for after 2030 include long-term targets such as the use of green hydrogen in heating systems, the use of biomass in carbon use, and the use of carbon capture and storage methods.

With these comprehensive transformation efforts, ÇEMTAŞ aims to pioneer green steel production by reaching the carbon neutrality target in 2050.
