The ASX-listed mining and processing company aims to refine iron ore without the use of coal and without carbon emissions through “Zero Emission Steel Technology”. Once operational, the pilot plant will produce 30,000 tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) per year. This product will be used in electric arc furnaces, enabling the production of green steel.
ARENA also funded Calix's previous preliminary engineering and design work for this project. The studies concluded that the zero-emission iron refining process is both scalable and cost-efficient.
The new process uses a combination of hydrogen reduction and electric heating technologies to treat iron ore. And it can treat not only magnetite, but also hematite, which is mined from the majority of Australia's iron ore mines. Many existing direct reduction technologies can only work on magnetite, making Calix's method more broadly applicable in the industry.
