Bolivia’s Mutún Steel Complex completes testing at its DRI plant

Bolivia’s state-owned company Mutún Steel Company (ESM) plans to begin producing significant volumes of rebar and wire rod by the end of this month to supply the domestic market.

Bolivia’s Mutún Steel Complex completes testing at its DRI plant

The Mutún Steel Complex (CSM) in Puerto Suárez, Santa Cruz is set to produce rebar and wire rod, aiming to substitute imports for key construction materials in Bolivia.

At the center of the production process is the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, considered the “heart” of the complex. Testing at the DRI facility is scheduled to be completed next Wednesday. Once successful, Bolivia will achieve a major milestone in domestic steel production by producing its own sponge iron.

ESM President Jorge Alvarado expressed optimism about the production phase, stating, “We are now ready to produce the final products, rebar and wire rod, for the Bolivian market.”

Alvarado also emphasized the speed of testing at the CSM facilities, noting that similar plants elsewhere may take up to two years to complete tests, while Bolivia achieved it in a record time since February.

The launch of the Mutún Steel Complex is expected to reduce Bolivia’s dependence on imported iron and steel products and provide a significant boost to the domestic industry.
