Baku Steel Company completes first phase of Azerboru modernization

The largest steel producer in the South Caucasus, Baku Steel Company (BSC), has successfully completed the first phase of a large-scale modernization project at the Azerboru production facility located in the city of Sumgayit, Azerbaijan.

Baku Steel Company completes first phase of Azerboru modernization

Production Capacity Doubled with New Technologies

As part of the phase one implementation during 2024–2025, the TPA-250 hot rolling mill unit underwent a full overhaul. Preparations were also completed for the installation of an induction heating system manufactured by GH Induction/Ajax TOCCO and a new straightening machine by Lazzari. These investments enabled the doubling of pipe production capacity, increasing it to 60,000 tons per year.

Additionally, production of pipes with new dimensions — up to 245 mm in diameter and 20 mm in wall thickness — has commenced. Mass production of high-strength pipes such as those in the API P110 class has also been successfully launched.

Enhanced Quality Control and Environmental Sustainability

Within the modernization efforts, Danobat-brand threading equipment, automated pipe transportation systems, and coupling installation lines have been commissioned. Furthermore, quality control capabilities have been significantly enhanced with the implementation of a magnetic particle testing device by Karl Deutsch and an ultrasonic inspection system from Nordinkraft, allowing for high-precision diagnostics of pipes and couplings.

The company’s newly developed production infrastructure, aligned with energy efficiency principles, is expected to minimize raw material losses while ensuring consistent product quality. In addition, the installation of a wastewater treatment facility in the coupling galvanization area has been completed, with commissioning set to begin soon, highlighting the company’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.

API Certification Opens Doors to U.S. Market

In November 2024, BSC obtained international certification from the American Petroleum Institute (API), confirming the compliance of its production processes with global standards. A follow-up audit in May 2025 reaffirmed this compliance. This certification plays a key role in enabling the company to access new export markets, particularly the United States.

Meanwhile, technological investments carried out in BSC’s steelmaking facility in Baku during 2024–2025 are helping to produce higher-quality steel billets for pipe manufacturing. This process is supported by the commissioning of a vacuum degassing unit and alloying technology systems.

Strengthening a Vision for Sustainable Development

The first phase of the modernization project not only increases production capacity but also reinforces BSC’s commitment to sustainability, quality, and export-oriented growth. Employee training programs have raised workforce qualifications, while the company’s internal knowledge infrastructure continues to evolve.

Baku Steel Company plans to continue the transformation of Azerboru in the coming period, aiming to expand its product portfolio and strengthen its position in the global market.
