ArcelorMittal brings art and architecture together by supplying steel for Doshi Retreat

Renowned furniture manufacturer Vitra has unveiled Doshi Retreat, the first project by Indian architect Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi outside India. In the project, the world-leading steel producer ArcelorMittal played a critical role with its sustainable steel solutions.

ArcelorMittal brings art and architecture together by supplying steel for Doshi Retreat

Doshi Retreat is located at the Vitra Campus in Weil Rhein, Germany. The campus houses works by globally acclaimed architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Herzog & de Meuron. The new landscape intervention offers visitors a multi-sensory experience, inspired by Hindu philosophy, featuring gong sounds, vibrations, and visual symbolism.

The most striking aspect of the project is the steel used. Produced in 2024, the steel was manufactured according to ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewable steel specifications. Indaten® weathering steel and heavy plates in HE220M beams were produced at ArcelorMittal’s Gijon (Spain) and Belval (Luxembourg) plants. The naturally forming patina on Indaten® steel develops over time, transitioning from dark gray to orange and eventually to a rich brown, adding both aesthetic appeal and durability to the structure.

Steel takes a central role in the design of Doshi Retreat. Tall walls and recessed pathways are supported and defined by robust steel walls. The complex three-dimensional shaping and forming processes were carried out by Ostseestaal.

ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal stated, “We are thrilled to support Vitra in realizing BV Doshi’s first project outside India. Doshi Retreat demonstrates once again how steel can be transformed into art, using ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® steel.”

Doshi Retreat will be open to the public starting October 25, offering visitors a multi-sensory experience where steel, design, and nature come together.
